NEW BEGINNINGS PARK
On August 13, 2004, Charlotte County was devastated by the horrific Hurricane Charley that swept through our area. St. James Episcopal Church and Port Charlotte United Methodist Church suffered severe damage from this storm. However, after clearing all the debris and trees from the damaged area, we were for the first time able to see each other as neighbors. The two clergy began conversation as to what to do with the open space that was between us and at that time discussion took place regarding the possibility of a meditation park that would be shared by both congregations and the surrounding community. A commitee was formed and discussion and planning began and has been ongoing for the past 1 1/2 years. On January 1, 2006, a dedication service was held between the two congregations and the ribbon was cut on the new playground. Since then, a landscape engineer has worked with the committee in developing the layout of the park. There will be a gazebo, altar, water feature, labyrinth, and picnic area and benches throughout the park for quiet meditation.
